Ramadan Mubarak 2017! (emergency appeal donation links)

Ramadan Mubarak to all Muslims around the world. This month always catches me off guard, especially with exams just around the corner. But I hope for it to be one full of tranquility, hope, self reflection, knowledge, abstinence and charity. In light of recentQuram tragic events in the world, I pray that the spirit of Ramadan encourages people to not lead themselves astray from what is merciful and just and stay committed to tolerance and patience, as is taught by our faith. My heart goes out to the millions of Muslims who will find Ramadan difficult as a result of continued warfare, poverty/famine or personal grievances. I pray God gives them the sustenance and hope they need ❤

EASY WAYS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Keeping in line with Ramadan themed posts, here’s some easy and cheap ways anyone can make a difference to someone’s life, while feeling content with yourself in the sense that you’ve made change. Any change, no matter how small or big it is, is just what we need more of in this world!

INFORM YOURSELF ON THE WORLD! Far too many people are cluelimagesess on daily events, tragedies and misconceptions that circulate the world on a daily basis, leading the way to ignorance which can cause misunderstanding and therefore an unnecessary conflict between people. The most simplest way is to watch more of the news or download an app! However, don’t rely too much on one politically inclined newspaper else you face being told what to think! The most healthy thing is to self inform yourself on the in and outs of our planet through different sources, coming to your own conclusion. It’ll teach you to love more and bring you towards truth 🙂

BROADEN YOUR HORIZONS! Following on from this, far too many people are too stuck in their own social sphere to understand other people. Immerse yourself in a foreign language or different culture, make a foreign friend/pen pal, talk to people that are not exclusive to your own social, ethnic or religious background. If we all did this, we could remove some of the unfortunate barriers that lead to misconceptions and lack of understanding of our one race – the human race.

LEARN SOME EMERGENCY FIRST AID! This is arguably very important, and can potentially save a life. It’s clear that so many of us, perhaps through no fault of our own, lack knowledge in basic emergency medical attention that could potentially save a life. We’re not all doctors, but there are very simple things we can do in life threatening moments such as heart attacks. You’d be surprised at just how easy they are! If you are a UK resident/national you can get a free pocket first aid guide delivered to your door from St Johns Ambulance here: https://www.sja.org.uk/sja/first-aid-advice/get-a-free-first-aid-guide.aspx And if you’re not from the UK, you can still download it!

FEED A HOMELESS PERSON/VOLUNTEER! For less than a fiver, you could instantly help someone who may not have eaten in hours. It also is a way to avoid the worries that some people have in directly giving cash to the homeless. But if you want to donate or feed in mass numbers, it’d be great to aid a homeless shelter with food or cash donations! You could even volunteer, particularly if you are young, as not only will you feel great, but you’ll gain vital experience for your future work prospective!

SIGN A PETITION! This is perhaps one of the easiest things to do at the click of a button! Your signature may feel minute, but it all adds up and collectively, could bring social awareness to some of the major problems in the world which you may feel strongly about, from mental health and woman’s rights, to child labour, persecution of ethnic and religious minorities, poverty, children’s education and human rights. The list is endless, and you may end up discovering more about issues that affect us all collectively, whether it be direct or indirect.

And finally, SMILE A BIT MORE! Yes, there are important issues to tackle in the world but how can we do that without more compassion and solidarity to them? If we can all unite under the fact that we’re human, then ‘differences’ will seem irrelevant in tackling the issues together, united.

NCS Action Day in Leicester!

20160305_130956So today was an exciting day where NCS (National Citizen Service) graduates across the whole of England reunited in their individual cities to continue our journey of social action, and contributing to our community as young people through charity work projects. Leicestershire, with around 45 young people who volunteered, chose to work with Action Homeless, a charity that supports the homeless and vulnerably housed people across the city and county. We took part in the Rucksack challenge where we filled rucksacks with essentials such as warm clothing items, non perishable foods like tins and biscuits, and lots of toiletries. We begun our appeal to the Leicester public since our last youth board meeting through social media, posters in schools and colleges, and word of mouth through family and friends, and a radio appeal this morning. (You can still drop off donations at 30 Frog Island or call 0116 240 7000). Though the donations we received merely amongst ourselves was AMAZING with the potential of hundreds of bags/rucksacks to be filled. We filled around 50 yet ran out of bags but still had loads left over to donate! It was a day well spent and really showed our potential as young people to continue aiding and volunteering to help the community. You can take part in NCS and be open to amazing things like this – check out http://www.ncsem1.org.uk/ if you’re from Leicester, Leicestershire or Rutland, and http://www.ncsyes.co.uk/ for the rest of the country 😀

National Citizen Service Appeal: DONATE TO LOROS!!

As part of the National Citizen Service (NCS) in the UK, a four week intense programme for 15-17 year olds which aims to build skills for life in participants as we take part in a two week residential, work in groups – with people from all walks of life and basically build skills for life! My most recent blog posts talk about both weeks of the downloadresidentials’ in depth to demonstrate the skills we have learnt!

We have gotten to the stage where we are taking part in our social action project, in order to portray our skills and truly make a difference to the community we live in. We have chosen LOROS, a local hospice providing for Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland, caring for and delivering excellent, compassionate, top quality and free of charge care for terminally ill patients, their family and carers in order to relieve the stress they may feel at this overwhelming, and often difficult stage. They care for over 2500 people annually, and are only given a limited fund each year, yet it costs millions per year to run  – the rest is only possible through kind and thoughtful donations which genuinely have an impact in delivering this care.

Our group –  team 12, on wave three of NCS this year are passionate about this charity, and after a visit to the hospice, have seen upfront just how hard the team and volunteers work to provide such a high level of service and ultimate comfort to the patients, at no cost. We hope that not only the rest of our city can see this unbelievably invaluable service at their feet when they need it, but also the rest of the UK, and even global hearts who can truly help us to leave our mark and make a difference to our community!

We will be doing various fundraising events across the next two weeks such as a summer fete, donation stations and raising awareness for this great cause, so stay updated as we post my teams events for the upcoming weeks. Please help support us in this charity in any way possible – you never know when you may need such a precious service.

Also, if you are a twitter or instagram please share our campaign using the hashtag #LorosForComfort. Post an image of something you can’t live without, share our links – MAKE A DIFFERENCE! 😀
